The President’s Corner

It has been an honor and a privilege to have served as president of this association for the past ten years. During that time, there have been many changes, all of which I believe were for the betterment of the association. I am particularly pleased with the establishment of a physical location for our Hall of Fame. We also instituted an annual bull/oyster roast that helped us create a scholarship fund in honor of the late Walter Cohen. Our Hall of Fame nights have been a great success and our regular membership meetings have continued to provide the fellowship that is expected of us. I would be remiss if I did not thank all of the board members who have served with me over these years. I will not mention them all here by name but, regretfully, three of them, namely Jack Mentzer, Walter Cohen and HerbWeidel died while in office. Thanks again for the support you have given me ; I am confident that you will do the same for my successors.

Election of New Board
The following members of our association were recently appointed to the Executive Board:
Tom Giordano
Nick Kropfelder
Dan Kropkowsk
Henry Long
Lonnie Nelson
Ray Noppinger
Ed Novak

Hall of Fame Program Ads
All members of the soccer community are invited to place an item advertising their business, association, league, or team in our Hall of Fame program booklet. Individual patrons are also being solicited. The program is distributed to approximately 350 guests at the Hall of Fame Banquet. Why not give your program some notoriety and place an ad with us? A blank form is enclosed for your consideration.

Hall of Fame NOMINATIONS
All members of the soccer community are invited to submit nominations for the Maryland Soccer Hall of Fame. Nomination forms are available from our website. To be considered for review in 2009 all nominations must be received by January 10, 2009. To enhance your candidate’s chances for selection, you are encouraged to submit comprehensive nominations that include as much information as possible. The selection committee does not have the time or ability to research the careers of all of the nominees under review.

Introducing New Members
We are pleased to welcome the following into membership: Jim Novak, John Valentini, Jr. and Charles Binegar. New members are always welcome to join our association and most join through a friend. Why not introduce a friend or relative into membership at our next meeting? Membership forms are available over the internet at: www. oldtimerssoccer.net

National Soccer H of F
Joy Fawcette and Jeff Agoos, both national team players, have recently been selected for induction into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in August 2009.

Falcone, Assaro Honored
The United States Adult Soccer Association recently honored Tony Falcone, President of the Maryland State Soccer Association by induction into the USASA National Hall of Fame. Tony has held state office for 20 years even to the point of having his term interrupted by a tour to the Far East while serving with the JAG branch of the U.S. Army. He has helped to build the state association into a highly respected body that has produced quality programs and teams.
Frank Assaro, coach of the national runner-up, Baltimore Colts F.C. was recently named USSF Region I Coach of the Year. Congratulations Tony and Frank on achieving these honors and for bringing recognition to Maryland Soccer.

Thanks to the Blast
The cost of producing this newsletter and mailing it to our members is a very substantial part of our budget.
