Real Madrid are preparing for the big derby against Atletico Madrid, and it also marks the first visit to the Wanda Metropolitano for Zinedine Zidane’s team. So far, the derbies between the two teams with Atletico as the home team have been played out at the Vicente Calderon. Atletico will be coming into the match looking to capitalise on Real Madrid’s poor form this season. Both teams have not been at their best this season and Barcelona have been able to take full advantage.
The match sees them Real Madrid looking to get a positive result against one of their biggest rivals. This will not be easy given that Atletico are yet to suffer a defeat this season. However, the unbeaten run has not exactly translated into a title challenge from Diego Simeone’s team, as they have been far too many draws for their liking. Even in the last few matches, Atletico have drawn against the likes of Villarreal in the league and cup competitions like the Copa del Rey and the Champions League. Even the victory over Deportivo La Coruna just before the international break was achieved courtesy of a late freekick.
The form of Real Madrid is also not good and the team has suffered some shock defeats over the last five matches. Yet, it is always difficult to choose one team or the other in such big matches. This is especially true in the case of this fixture with several players on both teams likely to miss due to injuries. Filipe Luis, Diego Godin, Koke, and Yannick Carrasco are the players doubtful for Atletico, while Real Madrid may be without Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, and Isco. Long term absentee Gareth Bale continues to be unavailable for this match. The lack of several stars may not dull the encounter in terms of spirit.
